In which young Penelope, in a labyrinthine effort to mask her true intentions, offers Parker a ray of hope only to dash it upon the harsh unreality of her declared motive.
(I know, I know. *sigh* Penny really should have said, ‘I just couldn’t afford to do the messages this week.’ I had to change it due to all the blank stares from my fellow Yanks. 🙂 )
‘I just couldn’t afford to do the messages this week.’
I ain’t got a clue either.
Ah… My bad. The slang dictionary I generally use does not specify the regional nature of that phrase, and I presumed it more widespread. Peevish.co.uk, however, lists it as Scottish in origin. So, with my mad skills in revisionist history… Penny is a scouser, from Liverpool, but her family moved there from Scotland! That’s what I meant all along, of course. Quite Amelia Pond, don’t you think? 😉
